My love of sport developed at an early age. From being a young boy I took a keen interest in sport, in particular cricket and football (AFL).
Summers would be spent watching test cricket on the television and going outside to pretend I was the next Lillee, Marsh or Chappell .
Moving to the country at a young age introduced me into the recruiting zone of the Essendon Football Club and from there my love of the Bombers grew. In those days we had a great team including a number of players who came from our area such as Tim Watson , so it wasn’t hard to support them.
My love of American sports also developed at a young age. With an American father whose family still lived there, but visited us regularly, I got to know about American football, baseball, basketball and Ice Hockey and of the teams in those sports (Eagles, Phillies, 76ers and Flyers) from their area, Philadelphia.
We visited there when I was six and went to a Phillies game and most Januaries I would gather with my father and grandfather to watch the Super Bowl. Later on another visit we would attend a Sixers game and later on I would receive newspaper clippings in the mail about how the teams were going.
What a far cry that was from now when you can watch the games live on your mobile phone!
Growing up in the country we got to play a lot of sports. While cricket in the summer and football in the winter were the main fare, there was also tennis, basketball, squash and softball played at various times.
Moving to the city bought the possibility to go and watch my favourite teams in action and the number of them have sure grown as time goes on. There’s the Melbourne Storm of the National Rugby League, the Melbourne Tigers in the National Basketball League , the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League as well as the multitude of national teams in sports such as Soccer, Rugby and Rugby League.
I have always had a passion for writing as well, I loved writing stories and aspired to be a journalist at various stages of my childhood. While I ended up going down a different path I had the opportunity to have a go at combining that passion for writing with my passion for sport in mid 2011 when I answered the call of the Australian Ice Hockey League looking for writers for the league website.
I covered a number of games for the league website that season, the first of which being the local derby between the Melbourne Ice and Melbourne Mustangs.
At the conclusion of the season I was approached to write for The Other Hewitt, which is now known as Hewitt Sports Network. This has seen the writing of match previews and reviews, history pieces and other stuff. It’s a great site run by some truly dedicated people. If you get the chance, check out my work.
I since expanded out my range of sports to baseball, covering the Melbourne Aces as Hewitt Sports expanded to covering the ABL for the 2012/13 season.
2013 also saw me take on the Hockey Editor role with Hewitt Sports and write some pieces for The Armchair Selector website, writing on Ice Hockey, AFL and NFL.
Hope you enjoy the blog as much as I enjoy bringing it to you.
